Four Pins
Four PIns was a men’s fashion, sneaker, and streetwear site owned and operated by Complex Media Group. As the main writer, I helped develop a signature voice and tone that was influential in how men talk about fahion, culture, and sneakers. Rather than link to the hundreds of posts I wrote, that covered daily drops, cultural moments, satirical pieces, op-eds, and Fashion Week, I’m going to present what other people wrote about my writing at Four Pins, its impact, and legacy.
Gary Warnett- One of the most important figures in streetwear and sneaker culture, Gary’s kind words about Four Pins and the work we did there remain one of my career highlights.
032c- The contemporary culture magazine wrote of the site:
When the streetwear blog Four Pins closed in 2016, it left a hole in menswear journalism. Irreverent and ironic where most menswear writing had been earnest and urbane, Four Pins attracted a cult readership of streetwear-nerds with an appetite for absurdist writing on obscure Japanese brands.
The site’s embargo on seriousness applied to product too. Alongside pieces on Visvim and Kapital, Four Pins published satirical manifestoes defending crocs and square-toes. Fast-forward a season or two: Demna Gvasalia is making the former at Balenciaga, and Alessandro Michele the latter for Gucci. The title’s signature brand of snark and subversion has made its way into the menswear mainstream.
More Quotes on Four Pins:
John Elliott- The ironic thing about Four Pins snarky sarcastic voice is that you knew what you were going to get and it made learning about and following menswear more approachable and entertaining. The fact that the writing was interesting and hilarious made it really enjoyable for most guys to follow what was happening on any given day. Four Pins and their extended community have been incredible to us.
Bethlehem Shoals- Four Pins didn't break the men's style blog mold, it created a new one.
Glenn O’Brien- Four Pins has been kind of a guilty pleasure for me and has helped me keep up with things that otherwise might have escaped me because I am trying to finish writing a book and finish reading about four.
Ronnie Fieg-There are few sites today that are entirely dedicated to menswear, and even fewer that can poke fun at themselves in the process.I don’t enjoy checking most of the blogs today because they are so repetitive with overly-regurgitated info. However, Four Pins always spun it their own way, which consistently kept them at the top of my reading list. Over the past year, Four Pins held the most exclusives for Kith releases over any other website, and that was no mistake.
